The ownership dataset gives the positions that US institutional investment managers report on SEC Form 13F every quarter: who holds a company’s securities, and what a manager holds. Every position links to the 13F filings it was read from, so you can open the exact line in the filing.

Coverage

  • Filings: Form 13F-HR and 13F-HR/A filed from 2020 onward, for the managers whose filings Captide collects. New filings appear within about 15 minutes of being processed.
  • Securities: what 13F covers: long positions in US-listed equities, some options and convertible debt. There are no short positions and no shares outstanding, so positions carry no percentage of a company.
  • Withheld filings: from 2023, a filing whose holdings don’t add up to the total on its own cover page (about 4% a quarter) isn’t published.
  • 13F-NT notices: a manager that files a 13F-NT reports no holdings of its own; another entity files them. Vanguard Group, for example, has no positions of its own for 2026 Q2.

Who holds a company

Filter by the security held: companyIds, companyTickers or cusips. Without periodEnd, you get the latest quarter end whose 45-day filing deadline has passed.
Positions come largest market value first. For Apple at 30 June 2026 that’s State Street (615,129,929 shares, $178.0bn), then Geode Capital Management and FMR.

What a manager holds

Filter by the manager: holderCompanyIds (managers are companies in Captide, findable with /companies/search or by ciks on /companies/list) or holderCiks.

How positions are built

  • A position is a manager’s holding of one security at a quarter end, summed over its 13F lines. A manager often reports one security on several lines (Berkshire reports Apple on 12, one per combination of its managers), and sources lists each of them.
  • Amendments are applied for you. A later 13F-HR, or a 13F-HR/A restatement, replaces what the manager filed before for that quarter. A NEW HOLDINGS amendment adds lines, so a position’s sources can come from two filings.
  • Values are in US dollars. Filings before 2023 reported thousands, and these are converted.
  • Options (puts and calls) are left out unless you pass include=options. An option position has optionUnderlyingShares, and its marketValue is the market value of the underlying securities, as Form 13F reports it. It never adds to shares.
  • principalAmount is the face value of debt held, not shares.
  • Securities are identified by cusip, as the manager filed it. security.companyId and ticker are set when the CUSIP belongs to one Captide company, and are null for funds, unlisted securities and CUSIPs that aren’t valid as filed.

Showing the source

Each source names the filing (documentId), the line, and where the line sits in Captide’s PDF of the filing (pageNumber and excerpt). Open it like any other source: fetch GET /api/v2/documents/{id} through your backend, then call the viewer’s loadDocument(documentId, { page: pageNumber, snippet: excerpt }) (see the Frontend guide). A line that couldn’t be located in the PDF has pageNumber: null; cite the filing.

Point in time

Positions are current values. With asOf, you get what had been published by that time: a filing counts from the end of its filing date in New York. History is complete from January 2020.

Paging

Pass each response’s nextPageToken as pageToken until it’s null. Pages hold up to 100 positions. If the holdings change while you page (a new or corrected filing is published), the next page returns 409. Start again without pageToken. This keeps a read from mixing two versions of the data, which could skip or repeat positions. A read rarely spans a change, but around the 13F filing deadlines (mid February, May, August and November) long reads can.
